Executing Tookie would be a political assassination
Stanley "Tookie" Williams should not be murdered by the State of California.
Here's why:
1. He is an African American who never received a fair trial in front of his peers.
2. Hollywood celebrities have come out against the execution even big names like Mike Farrell who normally don't get involved with politics.
3. It was never proven that Tookie knew the Crips were going to be a criminal gang when he started them. He certainly can't be held responsible for the crimes they committed after he left the club.
4. He is a victim of racism and cannot be held responsible for his actions.
5. The NAACP has asked us not to.
6. It would be the equivalent to a lynching.
7. Think of all of the young men who will never have a chance to have their lives improved by Tookie.
8. All of the press coverage and discussion about it will traumatize kids. Don't they have enough to deal with?
Do I think we should just let him go? Of course not, I'm a realist. Since Tookie admitted that he committed crimes many years ago I would insist on a strict probation that would put him right back in jail if he committed any more crimes (especially if he murdered somebody).
Part of the probation should also be that he agrees to keep publishing those excellent children's books that have done so much to fight crime. How many kids do we see running around killing people since he started his publishing career.

I set up my TIVO to record the news station, and thoroughly loved the momentous occasion.
It seemed lady justice had gotten her way, and that there would be one less savage today.
When outside the jail there arose such a clatter, the cameras had turned to see what was the matter.
When what to my civilized eyes did appear, but a lineup of actors, all liberal, half queer.
The misguided freaks drew some curious looks, as they proclaimed his innocence; clutching his books.
The tears then flew out from Sarandon's eyes, as she nominated him again for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The actors were tethered to an ACLU sleigh, all towing the line of the urban decay.
On Asner, on Penn, on liberal cop-haters, On Sharpton, on Jesse and
other race-baiters.
Then at 3:01 all curled up like a beetle, Tookie cried like a bitch as they gave him the needle.
When up from the actors there arose such a cry, they had failed in their mission, and Tookie DID DIE !!

I have known loved ones and friends who were victims of rape and molestation, and if I had been there when it happened, I would have no problem at all with putting a bullet between their eyes.

Tookie was never charged with rape or molestation. He had a wife and by most accounts several girlfriends--none of whom ever complained of abuse. He had a love child from one of the couplings who carries his name.

Also, you speak of rape, Tookie was raped by racism and was acting out. Of course what he did was wrong and he needed to go to jail until he had redeemed himself. But once he was redeemed what good did it do to have him sitting in a jail cell where it was hard for him to pen books for children?

I have a commentary about Tookie on my blog. I'm glad they smoked his arse. Maybe he will be a better person in his next existence.
Other than (an admittedly bad) error of judgement in his youth, Tookie was a model citizen. How many people in the world have stopped warring gangs, saved kids from gangs, and written hit children's books? He certainly made a mistake but we took the life of a man who was contributing to society.

Tookie turned himself into a great man which is amazing looking at all of the hardships he had to overcome from being black in a white person's world to dealing with the stigma of a murder conviction and resulting death sentence. Unless you've walked in Tookie's shoes and done the things that he has done then you should criticize or judge him.
