Blue Flypaper's Plan for Fixing NASA

Republicans pride themselves for being able to run wars. (What a horrible thing to be good at!)

But give them a peaceful task, say like "peace" in Iraq or managing NASA, and it's a big disaster. With regard to NASA, Challenger and Columbia both happened with Republicans at the helm.

You think that is partisan? Well, there has never been a space disaster during a Democratic administration.

Since we are stuck with the Republicans in the White House until 2008 (barring impeachment for war crimes like illegally invading someone else's country), Blue Flypaper believes that it has the answer...put NASA under Democratic leadership. John Kerry would do a phenomenal job with it and here are just some of the things Democrats could do to improve NASA:

1. Stop the blatant discrimination in picking astronauts. People-of-size make up half of this country and yet have never been selected to go to space? (I smell a discrimination lawsuit here). Let's fix this before half our country (and even more if you go on a weighted average) feel disenfranchised from the whole space thing.

2. Stop giving all of the plumb Space Shuttle contracts to the same "Beltway Bandits." Since the Republicans are quick to point out the importance of small business in America, then let's give the small guy the job of building future Shuttles and other space craft. Not just small business, but womyn-owned businesses, minority-owned businesses, and co-ops. Since the program is funded by the people, it should benefit all the people by being a job training program. Experienced engineers and scientists certainly don't need another opportunity so let's use NASA to employ people who've never had a chance to do these jobs or any other job for that matter. What a great way to learn on the job.

3. Double the NASA budget and raise the national minimum wage to a level that people can live without having to worry how they spend their money. We could easily pay for this by raising taxes on the top 1% of rich people who won't even notice that the money isn't in their Swiss bank accounts.

Why do the Republicans always make it so hard?

You know, this might actually work. I mean, NASA does need to be reborn. And judging from that picture, Kerry is the prototypical spermatozoon.

I dont like republicans either, but theres almost no logic to your argument. Why should women, minorities, and people "of size" be treated any different. We all have the same standards, astronauts have a very rigorous physical standards to meet. And as for democrats taking over, i agree that would help but its not going to save Nasa. One of those downed shuttles was actually due to positive lightning, which Nasa denied. The problems of nasa run to deep to be fixed by more money and a change in administration

Brad is right. The standards were set by rich white males so that only rich white males would meet them and the occassional token teacher. Look at the movie "Apollo 13," white males in the capsule, white males at "Houston Control," white males in the White House, etc. No wonder that flight was doomed. Zero gravity is one thing, zero diversity is another.

I'm not exactly sure what a "person of size" is. Secondly, I personally don't believe that any small business has the capacity to build and/or launch a space shuttle. Thirdly, why waste money on NASA when we could be investing in health care or education reform?

"Person of size" is the appropriate term for a person who is considered large (by some arbritrary white male determined weight standard). People used to have other terms for them (which I won't put here) that were insensitive. I read that something like 80% of people who are overweight are so for reasons not in their control. Yet, white-male dominated society chooses to discriminate against such people even when it is proven that it is not their fault.

As for NASA, I'm not sure what educational "reform" is. As far as I'm concerned, we just need to put a lot more money into education and health care. The only reform that they need is that they are starved for money. If we stopped pumping money into Iraq (other than to promote womyn's causes of course) and applied a fair tax rate to the top 1% of wealthy Americans we could do all of this and more. Finally, the way I see NASA is that it is an educational tool, most of the jobs should go to people who are being trained to do those jobs.

Oh yeah, as for small companies not being able to do the job, you have to start somewhere. Boeing, Microsoft, Starbucks and other greedy capitalistic companies all started small at somepoint.

The standards that the space program has is so they don't have some lard ass getting stuck in a hatch on the space shuttle.

The interiors of these vessels have to be small to make room for the massive amout of electronic devices that keep them from exploding when they exit the earth's atomosphere at 22,000 plus miles per hour.

If the people's will had been respected that would be the President of the United States and we would be well on the way to winning the war on poverty and not Iraq.

We would probably also be on our way of losing even more rights at a faster pace then currently.

Those without homes would have homes, those without healthcare would have healthcare. It would be beautiful it would be just and it could all be done by just getting the obscenely wealthy to pay part of their fair share.

Being liberal is one of the most beautiful, serene, lovely things one can be. Liberals can be one with a nature that they protect and also be confident with the knowledge that they hold morally superior positions to non-liberal ideas and arguments. I don't mind listening to other's viewpoints because as a liberal I know that I am right.

lol ... no one is right or wrong. reality is defined by your perception.

stupid bitch.

For conservatives that's true but not for liberals. Why do you think liberals are so smug? Because we're always right. It's not a superiority complex or anything just the way it is. I'd love to say we are 50/50 just like everyone else but it just isn't so. I asked my spirtual guide once if I sounded conceited, and she hugged me and wiped tears from her eyes and said that it was so beautiful that I, like all liberals, was so humble.

I don't put foreign substances in my body including any animal product, any chemical, anything that is not organic. I don't need drugs.

Also, as you know and has been well-documented, drugs were introduced into the ghettos by the CIA to keep minorities docile while white male capitalists exploit them. Look it up if you dont believe me. It's on the Internet!

I am well aware of the untruths that can be found on the Internet. I wasn't born yesterday and just because I'm a womyn doesn't mean that I don't understand technology!

Anyway to insure that I only post things that are true I first vet them through Google to see if they are Indexed. If not, I ignore them.

oh, True dearest:

You are a Woman. The non-word "Womyn" is not standard English, and was invented by rabid lesbian feministas who can't abide the letters "M-A-N" anywhere near them.

And once again you make my sides hurt from laughter from your comments. To use your "logic", you are probably a liberal arts major, whose degree will earn her the right to toss hamburgers for $8/hour after graduation.

Now if only I could have five minutes with you, to hypnotize you...(evil Rovian grin)

The battle to de-gender the English language has been fought for many years. Yes, feminists have carried the standard but it is really for the betterment of all. Do you really want your kids (assuming that you live in a hetereonormative environment) to grow up in a world with words like firemen, postman, and policeman? I doubt you do. How about army man or manhole? The list goes on. By taking a zero tolerance approach to gender-influencing words we are making it a less oppressive world.
