Blue Flypaper says Make the Supreme Court Reflect our Society

We have an opening to the Highest Court in the land and who are they nominating? A Euro-centric white male. I think the court already has its fill of white males so why are we putting yet another one on the bench?

Blue Flypaper thinks that it's time to make SCOTUS be reflective of our society and here are some appointments that would certainly be better than Mr. Roberts to achieve this.

Blue Flypaper SCOTUS Nomination Suggestions:
  1. A recently arrived immigrant who brings fresh solutions to our problems and speaks for the millions of legal and illegal persons living in our country.
  2. A native American. Perhaps a sage or a healer or a shaman.
  3. Someone is or has been homeless and understands poverty (this is important since 50% of our country now lives below the mean income level).
  4. A numerologist or astrologist who can put the problems that the court faces in a more universal context.
  5. A teenager since their generation is going to have to live with all of this longer than the people of age now on the court.
  6. Someone from the UN so that our decisions are in synch with the rest of the world (for those uncomfortable with this last idea we could require that they speak some English).
These are just a few ideas to bring new perspective to the court. There are other benefits as well. Originalists and Constitutionalists will enjoy the increased "checks and balances" this would bring. As it stands now with the same people in all three branches of government there are no real checks and balances. Roberts had worked for the Reagan administration and Gonzalez for the Bush administration.

Blue Flypaper asks: Why do we have to draw from the same old pool of federal judges and constitutional lawyers that has gotten us into this mess? It's time for a change!

Why must the court be reflective of society? I don't want to see a reflection of me up there. I don't want to hear the President announce, "I am nominating Judge Doe because, like Tobey Mannion, he visits internet porn sights, pisses away money on Lotto tickets, needs to have the sports page when he takes a dump, and masturbates to reruns of 'I Dream of Jeannie.'"

I don't think you want a recently arrived Immigrant. Many immigrants believe in "hard work" which is something that Americans don't believe in. (Except white collar republicans like me who sit in a chair all day and think that is "hard work").

There are two spots open. Rosie would be my first choice for one and I'm pretty open on the second as long as it isn't a white male drawn from the same group of judges and lawyers.

heres a crazy idea !!! Why don't we make the supreme court reflect our FUCKING CONSTITUTION YOU DUMB BITCH !!!! JESUS FUCKING CHRIST !!!

I truly, honestly wish i could meet you in real life so i could slap the shit out of you.

I don't know why this is so hard for you all. The government is to represent the people, the Supreme Court is part of this process. This country is made up of more than just white lawyers of age with a few token womyn and minorities. Unless and until we get it to reflect what this country is it will continue to be out of touch. No wonder the Hawaiians are trying to go to self-rule, who can blame those noble people?

First off have you ever even read the bill of rights ? apparently not.

"No wonder the Hawaiians are trying to go to self-rule, who can blame those noble people?"

let them have it i say. I would like the state of vermont (as my new home) to leave the united states and become its own sovereign nation.

But since that will never happen i just want the constitution to again become supreme law as it very simply lays the groundwork for the most basic of human rights.

Oh, c'mon guys...forget it.

You are trying to talk sense into someone who believes that some people are "legally challenged."

Reading tobey's and fatman's comments, I have to admit: I'm "silver screen lipstick lesbian sex scene challenged", because dammit, I haven't seen them ALL yet, and I feel a sudden urge to go bolt to my nearest softcore porn...er, video rental store...and rent Wild Side.

BTW BlueBabe, since you keep ranting on "heteronormative" relationships, I'm assuming you are at least a part-time kittydipper? Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Just post videos to let us know for sure, so we know you aren't a relationship chickenhawk after all (WEG).

If women and minorities would get up off their lazy asses and GET AN EDUCATION (imagine that) they just might have a shot at the supreme court. Geesh. I can't believe it's so hard for YOU to get.

And don't give the that crap about being oppressed. I've seen MANY single white mothers and many blacks GO TO SCHOOL and get an education to better themselves instead of taking handouts from the government and sitting around on their butts.

Hey there's a thought, maybe the government should STOP giving handouts in the form of a monthly check and PAY FOR EDUCATION instead. Give em two years to get a degree and a better job then CUT THEM OFF from my tax dollars! They'd be more willing to work if they were HUNGRY.

Well, we agree on one thing, education should be free, but 2 years is certainly not enough. They need at least 4 years plus another for "independent studies." If they want to go on to graduate studies, that should be free as well. Finally, students should get a stipend to live on so they don't have to hold on to 3 jobs while trying to go to school. Oh, yeah, all high schools and universities need to provide for day care for single mothers who are attending those schools. Do you know how hard it is for single mothers to try to balance school, 2 or more jobs, plus raising kids? No wonder they get stuck in poverty.

This will all pay for itself because they will get good jobs and become self-supporting but until they do they need subsidies. And if you are concerned about the ongoing subsidies propose paying them after graduation then these could be eliminated by guaranteeing good jobs to all graduates (this should make our small-government folks happy as it cuts out the lifetime payments to people who can't find jobs).

This could all be paid for by increasing the taxes on the super wealthy and pulling out of Iraq.

The UN should be closed down right away, a bloated and corrupt organisation that just holds up humanitarian aid for ages.

The best reform it could have is to exclude all the 3rd world debt nations. After all if they cant run their economy on a sound basis then why should they have a say in how the world is run.

fatman,

Maybe Blue should rent the unrated version, so she can learn a thing or two...?

Oh, damn - Anne Heche went "heteronormative" again after that, didn't she? Or was it because under that lovely liberal, polished "everygirl lesbian" exterior, Ellen was both ugly AND boring?

If I were female and lesbian, and had to have Ellen, I'd be looking for a friendly tallywhacker after that too...need therapy...lol

I think Bush is going to nominate Alberto Gonzales. Is he reflective enough? It may be just my imagination, but I think you've got some kind of vendetta against Bush. Call it a hunch. ;)

He's Latino which is great however when I last checked he was a man, a judge, and had worked in the administration: not all that creative. Also, when I last checked he had never been homeless, was not part of the UN, was not a shaman, or a numerologist so we can expect the same old "this law is constitutional is this not constitutional." BFD.

"Do you know how hard it is for single mothers to try to balance school, 2 or more jobs, plus raising kids? No wonder they get stuck in poverty."

The question is, DO YOU KNOW? Are YOU a single mother trying to get an education? 2 years is plenty to get a decent job so that their regular bills can be paid. Been there, done that, had 4 children to raise while doing it! I was never in poverty. That's a lop of poo.

The government should be there to help the poor HELP themselves...not pay for every Tom, Dick and Dumbass going through school and then find them a job to boot. I don't have a problem with the very poor receiving daycare assistance while attending school BUT it's not the responsibility of the government to support you throughout your whole life! You have to take responsibility and DO for yourself. Gawd, people need to stop bitching and make it on their own, for craps sake. IT CAN BE DONE.

If people quit cryin about how hard life is, and how "oppressed" they have been, blah blah blah, and started DOING something about it, they would make something of themselves. But wait, that would mean the handouts and laziness would have to end! Perish the thought!

"Oh, yeah, all high schools and universities need to provide for day care for single mothers who are attending those schools."

First of all, it is neither the fault of the high school or university that you found yourself pregnant while unwed nor their fault for your marriage going bad and you ending up divorced with a deadbeat, non-paying, ex-husband and children to care for. Life is hard...suck it up and deal with it. You know what they say, "You make your bed...now lie in it."
Paying for your stupidity and or your lack of good judgement in picking a spouse is your responsibility. How dare you suggest that hard working tax payers should foot the bill!

"..it's not the responsibility of the government to support you throughout your whole life!"

If it's not the government's responsibility then who's is it? If you are saying that this is a state and local government responsibility I guess I see your point...sort of. But if you are going to stick on that Republican "personal responsibility" line of non-thinking then I could not disagree with you more.

"Personal responsibility" is code for let our poor, oppressed minorities die in the streets and it's their own damn fault for being poor. Why didn't they get an education? Why didn't they get good jobs? Did they reallly need to smoke crack or have 2 kids at 16 or beat the daylights out of their probation officer?

A large segment of our society (all people of color, all womyn, most pagans, etc.) have the cards stacked against them by society and need a little help to overcome these obstacles like free healthcare, education, housing, job guarantees, minimum salary guarantees, etc. Pretty basic and small things to be able to give people to just slighty offset what these noble people have faced. Having the government give these things to our oppressed is our "personal responsibility," so are we going to do it?

"If it's not the government's responsibility then who's is it?"

Let's see....um...YOURS! It starts with the sun rising, an alarm going off, getting dressed, walking or driving to WORK, coming home and saying, "I worked hard today!" Then, this amazing thing happens...on Friday they hand you this thing called a PAYCHECK.

You take said paycheck, cash it or deposit it...and PAY your bills. Go to the grocery store, make dinner, relax and on Monday, DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN. It's each persons responsibility to WORK for a living. New concept to you?

I have a daughter who just turned 18 in Aug. She graduated H.S. in June. She doesn't want to go to college. She went to a business in town, asked about a job, got the job, and is making $10 an hour. Ok, so $10/hr doesn't seem like much right now BUT...she's learning about real estate and will one day be selling homes. Amazing...no poverty there. No one is opressing her. She took the initiative and found a job and has a chance to make more money as she learns the business.

"Personal responsibility" is code for let our poor, oppressed minorities die in the streets and it's their own damn fault for being poor."

Personal responsiblility is the code for "Get up off your dead beat ass and GET A JOB!"

Let me tell you about how "opressed" these minorities are. I tried to use the "system" once, many years ago when my sons father died from Lou Gehrig's Disease. I sat in a room filled with people "of color", all dressed up in their expensive shoes, tons of jewelry and cell phones, filled out TONS of forms, had an interview, and was told that because I made over $400 a month in the Social Security Death Benefit my son got, we made too much money. Who the hell can live on less than $400 a month? I couldn't even get health care for me or my kids. So, after pulling myself up out of my depression, I GOT A JOB and things started working out. Thank God I couldn't rely on the system or I'd still be sitting there depressed taking handouts and not having any motivation to FIND A JOB.

Now lets go across the street to my neighbor. I worked with his sisiter so I got the inside scoop. Two adults, two children. His wife worked full time at Subway, he worked on occaision at a car wash and didn't claim his money to the Social Services Department. They got FREE housing and food stamps. We're talking over $1200 a month. Now, she made over $400 a month. So why did they get benefits and not I? I was the wrong color. The system you like so much is fucked. Scuse my language.

Don't tell me how "opressed" minorities are. They CHOOSE to live a life of "gimme gimme". They take those handouts and have NO motivation to get a better job, apply for financial aide for college or to better themselves in any way. Why should they? They have someone GIVING them more than they deserve!

"A large segment of our society (all people of color, all womyn, most pagans, etc.) have the cards stacked against them by society and need a little help to overcome these obstacles."

A large segment of our society needs to get up off their ass, quit cryin and go to work. Problem solved. AND never vote for dumbasses who want to keep them OPRESSED by giving them EVERYTHING and keeping them DEPENDENT on the government!! Of course they'll vote for those who are willing to keep these handout programs going and enable them to remain lazy. *coughDemocratscough*

And now I'm off to buy ice cream with my hard earned cash. I made it all on my own, thank you very much.

I'm glad to hear that you were able to pull yourself out of the lowpoint but wouldn't it be better if you hadn't had to work so hard to do so? Don't you want a world where your daughter won't have to rely on herself, her skills, and her hard work to avoid poverty? Don't you want a world where not enough money ceases to be that thing that keeps getting in the way of having the things we need to have a fulfiling life? We can have all of this plus free healthcare, low income housing, increased minimum wage, etc. if our government wanted any of these. That's what makes me really mad.

BTW, there is a new post up so let's move this conversation to that topic.
